Emerging Trends in Computational Intelligence for Materials Design and Intelligent Manufacturing

Scope and topics

The rapid advancement of computational intelligence is transforming the landscape of materials design, processing, and advanced manufacturing. Recent developments in artificial intelligence, machine learning, evolutionary computation, optimization, data-driven modelling, and hybrid computational techniques are complementing traditional physics-based modelling and simulation approaches, enabling intelligent solutions to increasingly complex engineering problems. These advances are accelerating innovation in materials discovery, process optimization, manufacturing automation, quality assurance, and sustainable production systems.

This mini-symposium aims to provide an interdisciplinary forum for researchers from academia and industry to present recent advances in computational intelligence and their applications to materials science and advanced manufacturing. Contributions addressing novel computational methodologies, intelligent optimization, materials informatics, process modelling and simulation, explainable and trustworthy AI, smart manufacturing, Industry 4.0/5.0, intelligent production systems, and hybrid approaches integrating data-driven and physics-based models are particularly welcome.

The symposium will especially encourage research that bridges computational intelligence with computational materials engineering, advanced manufacturing technologies, process optimization, and engineering decision support to address emerging challenges in efficient, intelligent, and sustainable production systems. Original contributions presenting theoretical developments, innovative algorithms, computational frameworks, and practical industrial applications are invited. Research using traditional modelling methods such as free energy minimization, density functional theory, molecular dynamics, finite elements, and computational fluid dynamics is also welcome, provided it is augmented by some of the emerging intelligent strategies.

About the convenors

Nirupam Chakraborti is currently a Visiting Professor at Czech Technical University in Prague. He is also the Editor-in-Chief of Philosophical Magazine Letters, a prestigious journal belonging to the family of Philosophical Magazine — the oldest scientific journal in the world, which is still being published. Internationally recognized for his pioneering work on evolutionary computation in metallurgy and materials, he is the author of the book Data-Driven Evolutionary Modeling in Materials Technology, published by CRC Press. In the ScholarGPS ranking Professor Chakraborti is globally rated as the #16 Highly Ranked Scholar in the area of genetic algorithms, and he has been consistently ranked among the top 2% of highly cited researchers worldwide in the materials field, according to reports published by researchers at Stanford University. He received the Faculty Medal of Honor from AGH University in Kraków in 2026.

Millie Pant is a Professor and the current Head of the Department of Applied Mathematics and Scientific Computing at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Roorkee, India. She is also a Joint Faculty member of the Mehta Family School for Data Science and Artificial Intelligence, IIT Roorkee, and an Adjunct Faculty member at the Asian Institute of Technology (AIT), Thailand. With around two decades of experience in teaching and research, her work focuses on computational intelligence, evolutionary computation, artificial intelligence, machine learning, optimization, and their applications to engineering and industrial systems. Her current research interests include explainable AI, intelligent optimization, computational materials engineering, digital manufacturing, healthcare analytics, and decision-support systems. Prof. Pant actively collaborates with researchers worldwide and has organized several international conferences and special sessions. She serves on the editorial boards and technical committees of various international journals and conferences and is a regular keynote and invited speaker at national and international forums.
